Life Sciences Returnship Initiative

The BioHive Returnship Initiative

Our mission is simple: generate more opportunities for Utah returners within the life sciences industry.

BioHive has brought together a cohort of life sciences companies to create more research-based returnship positions in the state. Partnering organizations aligned with our mission join us to prepare and create resources for returners looking to re-enter the life sciences workforce.

What is a Returnship?

A returnship is a temporary role with customized support for individuals who have taken an extended absence from their career. Generally 12-20 weeks long, returnships offer a transitionary pathway back into the workforce and often lead to full-time employment opportunities. Similar to an internship, it can be a highly useful experience for returners to re-enter their field by updating their skills to current industry standards, connecting with peers to rebuild their network, and re-developing confidence in the workspace.

Who is a Returner?

A returner is an experienced professional who has elected to take an extended absence from employment and is seeking to re-establish themselves on their career pathway. Several reasons for pausing their career include the following: illness, parental leave, care-giving to family, un-retirement, or military duty. Typically, individuals have been unemployed and not actively searching for work for at least a year and more commonly for a few years.

Attend an Event

BioHive is launching a Returnship Workshop Series to bring together the community of returners, our cohort of host companies, and our partners to advance returnships in the life sciences industry. Please join us for an opportunity to learn and receive support on your journey back to the life sciences workforce.
